Working with Agency creatives, we developed designs for multiple Times Square jumbotrons to be played simultaneously during the Network’s upfront presentation date. It was truly a sight to behold, standing in the middle of Times Square and seeing on nearly every major animated billboard a single cohesive design.
Working with Fast Company and DigitasLBi, we animated and designed this 3 part web video series, detailing the rise, fall, and ultimate turnaround stories of three prominent american brands.
Working with the creative teams at Viacom and Velocity, String Theory developed the design and animation for this hysterical web video series for the SuperBowl.
String Theory brought to life this idea of massive amounts of computers all wrapped up into the power of one single IBM server, and doing so by bringing as much Hollywood-level animation to the web as we could in the process. This ad was featured in interactive form in various interactive banner formats.
Hot on the heels of our runaway success with the debut of the Trident White campaign, we turned full circle and began conceptualization for this second spot, the “summer blockbuster” of the series. With cinematic nods to films ranging from E.T. to Indiana Jones, this spot came in bigger, louder and faster than the original.
Again, this is a project that got it’s start from a print campaign we designed and executed. We liked it so much, we worked to develop it out into 3D animation in hopes that listerine might try something different with their advertising instead of just the usual mouth rinsing sequences. It never went forward, but we still think it was awesome!
Make.Believe, the wide-ranging global campaign for Sony, focused on creative industry leaders who used Sony products or worked with Sony creative endeavors to realize their life dreams. String Theory produced many of these video features, this piece being one that features Joshua Marc Levy, an Art Director responsible for some of Sony Music’s most memorable album covers.
Working Directly with Roger Waters and Creative Director Sean Evans, we designed, animated, and executed several animations used for Roger’s critically acclaimed 2010 world tour for The Wall. “A Staggering Masterpiece” “I never dreamt I’d ever see something so astonishing. I also couldn’t have imagined it would be so overwhelmingly relevant.” (Orange County Register)
This piece was a unique deliverable, designing, modeling, and animating the plant in several loopable passes that would be coded into Flash and controlled and looped by the user. For a full interactive specimen, see the project in the web section of our site. This version, however, really shows off the amazing rendering and detail in the piece, not the least of which is the custom-designed hair simulation developed to make such dynamic thorns along the body. The audio was custom sound designed and scored as well.

This is a short, fun 3D animation promoting the release of an AC/DC Box Set. The case itself was an actual functioning Amp, so playing off that idea, we flew through a stage setup following a cord plugging into the amp, as if it were a fuse. Rock and Roll!

This 2 hour special for the Animal Planet is slated to be their biggest premiere special for the year. Working with AP creatives and production company JWM, I directed the design for the show overall, including a gigantic package of graphic deliverables. While Cadin Batrack and I focused on designing the various types of graphics, we passed off our designs to Animal Planet, a Baltimore-based animation studio for production of the many final elements.

A 10 hour epic documentary event by award-winning director Ezra Edelman, this film chronicles the history, rise and fall of an American Icon. The political and economic climate of Los Angeles and it’s police department, Race relations in America, and the Media firestorm from the trial of the century take as much prominence as the man himself. It World Premiered in 2016 at the Sundance Film Festival, and was subsequently slated for a 5 night premiere on ESPN.
A feature length doc by award-winning director Paul Rachman, American Hardcore chronicles the history and development of the Hardcore music scene of the early 1980’s. The political and economic climate of Reaganomics and the final days of the cold war take as much prominence as the bands themselves. It World Premiered in 2006 at the Sundance Film Festival, and was subsequently picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for Theatrical release and DVD.
This is one of several pieces we worked to develop with creatives at Dentsu, for Canon’s gigantic live expo. All talking heads are shot greenscreen and composited, in addition to all the animation and design.

String Theory directed, designed, and animated this video for Tedeschi Trucks Band, their hit single “Made Up Mind” off the Sony Music Masterworks album of the same name. Taking inspiration from the album cover, we framed a conflict between nature and industry by creating a game of “chicken” between a charging buffalo and a steam train. Kinetic Metal Type, 3D buffalos? It all adds up to one fun project. Rolling Stone Magazine called the video “One of the more creative lyric videos in recent memory” and iTunes ranked it in their “Best of 2013” list.

The title sequence to a short film/doc directed and produced by Michael Fox and Edit Beach, this doc was screened at the 2013 NYC and ChicagoFood Film Festivals.
A funny take on the animated narrator genre, this was a Viacom executive’s story of meeting Bill Clinton, used for a corporate presentation/pitch. The great illustrations and comical delivery really made it something funny.

This logo animation for Legacy Records is used on the head of all of their video and marketing and corporate materials. We developed this version on black, as well as a solution that worked on white as well.
This video was created for Save The Children, for their holiday campaign for donations. Working directly with the organization, we helped develop this on a tight turnaround, and with as limited a budget as was possible (for charitable cause). We recorded the VO, and mixed the audio, creating a powerful piece that is memorable and emotional.

We and JWT have combined creative forces several times to produce some of our favorite work. Rolaids is the first of these collaborations. Entirely in need of a shot in the arm, Rolaids asked JWT to come up with something different and visually exciting to herald in their 5 new fruit flavored line of products. Pulling out all the stops, we worked to develop a stylish, fast and energetic new world full of color and flash, with CGI, a shoot, an edit, title design and logo animation all thrown into the mix. What came out was truly more than the sum of the parts. We love this stuff.

Asked to research and design some new looks for Nissan, graphically we dove right in. We incorporated the feeling and idea of a high tech, high performance engineered machine, by creating instruments and meters, explosive light elements, a blistering edit, and a title/logo design pushing their tagline “Driven”. What a blast.
Working with editorial company Earth 2 Mars and editor Justin Bolger, we designed and animated 2 international commercials for Foxwoods Casino. From initial styleframes through the pitching, bidding, shooting and execution, Mo and John took this project from beginning to end with numerous effect and design shots, tracking and a sophisticated blending of 2D Graphic Design and 3D Magic. The clients loved it. We loved it. Isn’t it great how that happens?
Working directly with Roger Waters and Creative Director Sean Evans, we designed, animated, and executed over 45 minutes of animation used for Roger’s 2006 World Tour for his seminal classic Dark Side Of the Moon. With an accelerated schedule of 35 days, we worked day and night with Roger developing mind-bending space animations, political stabs, and sometimes just pure, psychedelic abstractions. Rather than show clip after clip of what we did, we’d rather just show you the experience of how it all looked live. A once in a lifetime experience, to say the least!
This spot is dear to me for several reasons. We had designed a print ad for Saatchi and Dreft illustrating this concept, and it went over so well that they decided to make a 15 second animation for television too. With the agency creatives, we were off and rolling. On a very tight timeline we jumped right in to a full CGI environment where delicate, beautiful typography would be the focus. Years later, it still feels classic and remains one of our favorites.
Working with creatives from O+M along with another editorial company, we worked to design a series of campaigns for Miller Lite that were different from the typical beer commercial. This spot is interesting to me because of it’s subtle simplicity, and yet charming execution. From footage to sound design to delicate typography to a simple, beautiful logo ending, we feel that this proves that some of the nicest solutions aren’t always the loudest or brightest.

This documentary feature film (premiering at SXSW) follows the lives of a crew of young volunteer scientists who enlist to live in a dome separated from the rest of the world, to stud the effects of isolation in advance of an eventual mission to Mars.

This is a large scale, national outdoor campaign for Tylenol Cold, in which the viewer is warned of how many germs are around them at any given time. 14 individual concepts were conceived of and executed, ranging in format from telephone booth ads, bus and subway hangers, bus shelters and roadside billboards. The on-location nature of the campaign allowed us to customize the concepts to suit the location, ie: bus and subway cars got versions with strap hangers, while phone booths got phone art and money. This campaign was an absolute blast.
This was a single page ad run in magazines from “Parenting” to “People”. It was such a successful ad we were commissioned to translate the concept and design from print into animation for a television commercial. The full spot can be viewed in the MOTION section of this website. It has always been one of my favorite pieces, both in print and in motion.
Working with Tapestry International on updating and reinventing an educational program for the Discovery Channel, we pushed the envelope of how kids shows were “supposed” to look. Giving a hip facelift in addition to a slickly designed informational package, these shows became more effective as teaching tools, in addition to looking great, proving the age old relationship between design and content. I guess the academy agreed, since the show went on to win a 2004 Emmy Award for Best Children’s Educational Show.

While designing at Baltimore’s NCSDO, I was working with the print team in adapting Barnard’s beautiful and sophisticated print package to the newly developing internet. This site has changed and morphed countless times, but this first stage of their overhaul was an important step for the institution, and still remains a favorite in the back-catalogue.
Star Trek: The Experience is a large scale themed hotel/casino in the Hilton in Las Vegas. While designing at Indigo Information Designers, we worked on this launch site showcasing a tremendously cool place that was actually still under construction. It was left to us to create compelling imagery from rather incomplete (and not well shot) material. If you are a Trekkie, you HAVE to see it if you go to Vegas.

Having done the Identity and main title sequence for Animal Planet’s hit show Animal Precinct, The network made a spin-off called Animal Cops. This show became such a big hit, they decided to template it to different cities every year… Detroit, Houston, and soon to be San Francisco.
This fun show highlighted various people having trouble selling their homes, and resorting to non-traditional measures to do so.

Working with Sony music films, we designed and animated their production credit logo sting, as seen before all their movies, premiering before “Cadillac Records”
We made an animated, loop-able piggy-bank, with various actions and loops as the user’s cursor became a hammer and the user tried to “crack” the bank open, the piggy ran away.
This piece was an interactive deliverable as well, showing a piece of glass art, like you might see in soho or a fine gallery, and having the user, by sliding, transform the art into the samsung display, which was designed and influenced by the world of fine art.

While we had a blast making this, it was still very much a pleasant surprise when we heard it won First Place honors in the 2003 John Caples International Awards for Advertising.
